Hey guys, we've had some good discussions on here and I've read them all, but I am still unclear what issues might pop up if I do a GSM/Factory reset BEFORE upgrading to 2.3.  The issues people have reported, I'm not sure if they did this beforehand or not.  Anyone want to chime in with results from doing a full reset beforehand?  Currently, I'm running 2.2 with practically no issues and don't want to deal with freezing or weird reboots, etc.  Although, I would like the 2.3 features, so I'm still on the fence.
Thanks.

I'm in same situation and just joined this board.   Relatively new Cappy user (bought used from Ebay recently) and 2.2 works fine with a little lag here and there.

I am always one who wants the "best possible" so I want to upgrade, but I don't want to get into GB and then find out that my experience has actually gotten worse due to bugginess.   I have no problem doing a factory reset if that is what it takes to get a clean install.

On January 16, 2012, AT&T released the OFFICIAL supported Gingerbread 2.3.5 for Captivate.  I upgraded a few hours later using Kies mini with no apparent problems (as I had done before to go from OS 2.1 to 2.2 Froyo).  A few problems I noticed immediately afterward.

1. Whenever the USB cable is used (even for just charging the phone) after it is disconnected you will get an annoying "TetheringDevice Manager - Force Close" error.
2. The USB connection for Media Player no longer functions; you cannot sync music to your Captivate from Windows Media Player.
3. The "Daily Briefing" app previously found on the leftmost Home screen is gone.  This was configurable for stock quotes, local weather, and mobile news headlines from AP.

I phoned AT&T who put me on a 3-way with Samsung.  Their story is that Daily Briefing and support for Windows Media Player were eliminated from Gingerbread (conjecture is due to dispute between Google and Microsoft).  Samsung and AT&T post info at the time of upgrade on all the great benefits of Gingerbread but none of the lost features.  When I pressed Samsung and AT&T about this they just said they were not forwarded any info on features lost.

Interestingly, Samsung website has an updated version of the Captivate User Manual for the AT&T-branded phones dated Jan. 17, 2012 and it includes instructions for syncing music to the Captivate using Media Player.  Looks like a big bug to me  HUH?

I just upgraded to the gingerbread OS from Froyo.  Now my media scanner will not find any media files.  They are located in /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/Audio.  It used to find them but does not find anything now.

I have tried:
 - Rebooting
 - Factory Data Reset

Any suggestions?

Update: I did find that if I move my audio files under /mnt/sdcard then the scanner finds them.  It is like it is not looking in the "external_sd" folder for some reason

You left out the most important part - what did they say regarding the tethering issue.  It is driving me nuts.

I got the same message 3 days ago, but after reading all the issues
discussed in the pros/cons thread, I have decided to wait. I am very
interested in hearing how these more recent updates go. Could it be
that they fixed some the obvious update errors that require the
factory reset???  Doesn't seem likely, but stranger things have
happened....

Got the same text, same time. Did it that night, no luck yet. I originally flashed from 2.1 to Froyo.UCJI6 back in Dec '10 - Jan '11. Now it won't connect to kies and it sent my windows 7 pro machine into a permissions loop from hell. I've search everywhere with no luck and I wouldn't post here otherwise. Any help would be amazing!!

I upgraded to Gingerbread soon after I saw the announcement here (but before AT&T notified me on my phone).  The update went smoothly but soon after I, too, started having the annoying issue with the tethering manager and the occasional freezes.  So today I thought I would reset the phone and start with the least difficult reset (as outlined in post 109 - excellent info) using the standard reset in settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset.  I thought if that didn't fix the tethering issue, I would proceed to the next level.

The reset has seemed to take care of the tethering issue.  How I know is that prior to the reset every time I plugged in the USB cord, I would be presented with the force close message at least 2 times.  Well, this hasn't happened in over 3 hours since I have reset the phone so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The phone also appears much snappier than prior to the reset.  I had backed up all my applications prior to the reset and using MyBackupPro was able to restore all of the applications with no problem.  Unfortunately, the only thing that MyBackupPro does not do is restore the various desktops.  I wonder why they can't do that.

I will report back if the phone proves me a liar.  I appreciate all of the helping information on this form.

I did the GSM reset after updating to 2.3.5 and everything looks good so far. 2.3.5 stayed and the phone is working like new.

Update 02-13-2012 Three days later after my GSM reset and upgrade to 2.3.5 all is well. No issues. This is the best my Capivate has run in almost 1 1/2 years. Teathering issue is gone after the reset . I kinda like my phone now! sad to say lol. Oh FYI when I did the GSM reset it wiped it out and I was on a clean install of 2.3.5

Is your 7 Pro 64 bit?  Mini Kies can be real snotty trying to work on a 64 bit system.  I finally had to switch to a 32 bit machine for Mini Kies to work properly.

One of the other threads suggested that a clean disengage from Kes mini will stop the tethering error.   Check out post #9 in this thread:

http://www.samsungcaptivateforum.com/samsung-captivate-updates/tethering-error-gone!!!/

If this works consistently, it's a LOT better than a factory reset!
