I have an unlocked Captivate with 2.2. Is there a 2.3 upgrqade recipe that is rock solid?

Model number      SAMSUNG-SGH-i896
Firmware version   2.2
Baseband version   I896UXJL1
Kernel version      2.6.32.9
Build no.          FROYO.UXJL1

-------update
I didn't get a reply, so  searched and found people talking about Kies.  Someone had mini-Kies problems on 64-bit Windows 7 so I downloaded Keis from Samsung support page for Captivate SGH-i896 http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/mobile/mobile-phones/all-phones/SGH-I896ZKARWC-support . Kies never displayed my device in top left but immediately said update was available so I followed the instructions.  Then the update on my pc froze at 0% complete. I had no choice but to kill Kies in Task manager. Tried again next day adn Keis recovered the entire upgrade.. (http://www.samsungcaptivateforum.com/kies-mini-kies/keis-2-2-0-firmware-update-hung!/msg16610/#msg16610  My unlocked Galaxy S Captivate now has 2.3.3 Gingerbread.

I did the Gingerbread update about a month ago and immediately got the "tethering" error that seems to be very common. It really never went away.

Today, my Captivate really went haywire (for no apparent reason to me, no new apps, etc.). I got every possible error message "android processes" "Mail app", I can't even remember all of them. I couldn't even dial the phone. It was a mess.

With no other alternative I looked around for a way to do the factory reset. The one that used the power and volume buttons didn't work, so in desperation I tried *2767*3855#. It worked.

It is a bit of a pain re-entering passwords, setting up accounts and reinstalling apps. But, I got rid of a lot of junk and everything works perfectly. Gingerbread looks good and seems pretty fast, I've even noticed that the battery seems to last longer.

A factory reset is pretty drastic, but I'm glad I did it.

Adding another to the list of those with the tethering popup and now rebooting also.  Upgraded to gingerbread 2 weeks ago, no problems other than the tethering popup.  Then a couple of days ago and now it starts doing the reboot after getting the tethering popups when starting or stopping charging.  Also burning battery about twice as much as before, and never really saw a battery life improvement after upgrade.  Going to try the factory and GSM resets this weekend and see if that fixes mine.

I performed a GSM reset before upgrading to 2.3 and then immediately after I did a GSM reset again.  I have had no problems with 2.3 at all.  It's running smoother and nicer than 2.2 was.

Update:  After several days later, I still haven't had any issues.

After 3 weeks I have had no more tethering problems and the phone runs great.  Had one or two times where the phone rebooted while I was switching between several running apps, but nothing major.  Overall a huge improvement over 2.2.   If you are having tethering issues and haven't done the reset, do the GSM & factory data resets and that should fix it.

Upgraded to 2.3.5 finally - was waiting for a simple way to root and finally had the time to do the research and quickly figure out how to use Odin.

Overall, upgrade seems to have improved startup/shutdown times.  Did not have to "unroot" before upgrading.  Also, much less laggy than 2.2.

One question / issue - I have a compulsion to watch my free memory stats, and on 2.2 I was anywhere between 135 and 170mb free RAM.  After going to 2.3.5, I'm now consistently between about 80 and 125mb free RAM.  Is that expected?  In other words, does 2.3.5 use more RAM for the system and required running services?

So after several months of hating that I upgraded my cappy to ginggy 2.3.5 due the locking, freezing, roboting and just unappealing discusting lagging. I went in the ATT service center, held up my cappy and told the ATT guy to duck, I'm about to throw this thing at the wall and put it out of its misery.

Before I didl that the sevice guy offered to reflash the O.S to see if that would solve my problem. They did a good job being I didn't have to re-loaded all my app, and contact back on the pnone.

I did notice that looking at my software that the O.S they flash me to  is 2.3.6, looks like a new patch was put out there and think it was made for the Galaxy II.  Has anybody had theirs updated to his version, if so how is it working?

I have an unlocked Samsung Captivate, which I upgraded to 2.3.5 UCK1 leaked update last year.

The ATT instructions are different for 2.1 and 2.2, I was wondering if I can safely upgrade to the official version from my leaked one.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,
