Everytime I check for a software update I receive the error message :"Samsung cannot connect to the ATT server"

This is getting old. I have search the threads on this site and google this problem but can not find an answer to this problem. I have seen other's post the same question and it doesn't seem to get answered. I called ATT and even Samsung neither could explain it either. Samsung had me reset my phone that didnt work and now they want my phone back for 5 days to reflash it. I dont think that will solve the problem either.

Any ideas?

Hello & welcome to the forums.

I'm assuming you made it to the screen where it asked to check the server for new software update, and you clicked OK.

Since it sounds like you've checked more than once for an update, have you gotten the message at all indicating that you need to wait 24 hours to check again?

This might be a legitimate issue because the AT&T servers are so clogged with people trying to update, since this update was just released.  The update was supposed to roll out in waves to prevent server clog, but tips/tricks are being discovered and folks aren't needing to wait for the push message to update.

I think a reflash is unnecessary.  I think a factory reset is unnecessary. I think patience is definitely necessary.

I am getting the same message and I just reflashed back to stock, and now just reflashed back to cognition 2.1.1 rom. I think it's on the server end... I hope anyways.

Hey there Captivators,

I updated my software last week successfully on my phone.  It has worked fine since then except for one issue.  Now whenever I try the "software Update" it attempts to connect and after about 30 seconds it comes back with a "unable to connect to AT&T Server" message.  Once it does that it won't retry or even allow an attempt for another 24 hours.

Anyone else having this issue?  I hope this is some temporary thing because so many people are checking for updates.  I sure hope this doesn't prevent me from further updates down the road.

Any idea's or thoughts?

The "unable to connect" could just be because of server traffic.

Here's how you can bypass the 24-hour hold:

Menu -- Settings -- Date and Time -- Uncheck Automatic -- Set date to tomorrow

Power recycle phone

Menu -- Settings -- Software Update -- Check for Update

(keep touching the screen so the phone won't sleep, not sure if interruptions cause issue or not)

Update will run/install/reboot if successful
**It seemed to take waaaaaaay too long for the phone to boot back up, hung on the Galaxy S opening screen.  I popped the battery out and cranked it up again and the load time was normal.**

Menu -- Settings -- About Phone -- Build Number will now display ECLAIR.UCJH7

Menu -- Settings -- Applications -- USB Settings -- PC Internet is now gone, Kies shows (Firmware Update) next to it

Check the "Firmware Update" thread for additional information.

Well the date change trick recommended earlier did allow me to retry the "Update", but I'm afraid I'm getting the same error message as before.

"COMMUNICATION FAILED
Unable to communicate with AT&T Server"

I'm one of these nerds who was always checking for updates almost everyday and I never had a communication error before.  I also have the Wi-Fi turned on and it connects easily in my house.

The build number display is correct at ECLAIR.UCJH7

Any other ideas?

Could be that the servers are so overwhelmed by people trying to get the update that it can't handle anymore traffic at the moment you checked.  Try and wait another day and try again...I wouldn't fret too much since it's not the froyo update.  You'll get it eventually, just gotta have patience sometimes.

If the error occurs again tomorrow though, let us know.

Captivators . . .

1).  I am NOT rooted.
2).  This only started to happen AFTER the phone was updated last week.

The build number display is correct at ECLAIR.UCJH7

If your phone is showing UCJH7 in the build number, there is no other updating available at this time.  Froyo won't be out now until sometime in November.  It's actually pointless to try the software update option until the 2.2 release has been announced.

And again, there's so much server traffic for folks trying to get this UCJH7 update that it's not surprising in the least that failed communication notifications are being seen rampantly.  I didn't get that message but I also updated sometime after 1am...

Just a FYI my phone has been doing the same thing after I updated, and I was not rooted when I did it.

I have rooted -> Still have that message
However since then I have hard reset -> Still have that message
I have flashed a new rom -> Still have that message

Wonder if its a region thing? What state are you in?

I seem to have the same error when I try to connect through wifi, but then when I turn my Wifi off, and connect through 3G it works.  So apparently you have to connect through 3G.  I have read the same advise over at XDA developers too.

Using the "Date Change" trick I just tried AGAIN using Wi-Fi off and going through 3G and the results were different.  This time I got the same error message, but it was much faster.   Angry

I think I'll wait a couple of weeks and see if its just lots of traffic on the system updating.
